As Alien: Romulus continues its successful theatrical run, the next Predator movie has quietly started shooting

Most moviegoers agree that Alien: Romulus is a pretty fun time and perhaps even the sci-fi horror series’ best since Aliens (1986). Well, it depends on how crazy your personal ranking of the franchise is. Anyway, with both Alien and Predator now back on track, it appears that 20th Century Studios isn’t slowing down and has already started shooting the next Predator standalone flick.

Via AvP Galaxy, who have done a pretty great job over the years of staying on top of everything Alien and Predator, we’ve learned that Predator: Badlands is now filming in New Zealand. The directing-writing duo of Dan Trachtenberg (10 Cloverfield Lane) and Patrick Aison (Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes) is again behind the wheel, so that’s reason to celebrate, as 2022’s Prey kicked ass.

This time around, however, the plan is to release the next Predator movie in theaters after Prey scored an incredible critical reception and pleased most fans. The folks at Disney know they screwed up by dropping it on Hulu/Disney Plus, and looking at the numbers that Alien: Romulus is making on a $80 million budget, chances are a pretty solid Predator movie could do well in theaters too.

Following Star Wars: The Acolyte's cancellation, star Amandla Stenberg has stated it was "not a huge shock"

The Acolyte was revealed to be cancelled on August 19, only weeks after its season 1 run ended on Disney Plus. While it worked well enough with critics, a sizable portion of the Star Wars fandom outright rejected it, citing plenty of s**t reasons and a few other complaints that were actually reasonable. Now, the show's (double) star, Amandla Stenberg, is finally speaking about the cancellation.

According to them (via Instagram), it was "not a huge shock" following the "rampage of vitriol that we have faced since the show was even announced, when it was still just a concept and no one had even seen it." They're not wrong at all about the obvious hate campaign that was staged against the series no matter the actual quality of it, but that doesn't even begin to explain why it was cancelled.

Last week, co-star Lee Jung-jae was far more restrained in his comments: "Honestly, I am hoping that maybe there could be changes in the future... Because you never know what’s going to happen. So on a personal level, I really hope we could get to see further stories of Leslye’s second season." Of course (spoilers ahead), he doesn't care that much since his character, Master Sol, completed his arc and died at the end of season 1 at the hands of Osha, his former apprentice. That said, it makes sense he's also quite disappointed about how things have gone down for a show he spent so much time working on.

Tom Burke joins Hunter Schafer in Prime Video's Blade Runner 2099, as Hideo Kojima probably celebrates

Blade Runner 2099 will be Amazon's next big sci-fi bet in the TV space, and its cast has been enticing for quite a while now. It can get even better though, as Tom Burke (Furiosa) and Maurizio Lombardi (Ripley) have joined the ongoing shoot.

Deadline shared this news, stating it didn't have details on the characters the actors will be playing. But that won't stop Hideo Kojima from getting super excited about this show.

Unsurprisingly, the legendary video game creator has constantly reminded us of his love for Blade Runner, also stating he's ready for Blade Runner 2099 because he's not one of those fans who automatically think the next entry in a famous franchise will be shite. Now that Hunter Schafer is leading the ensemble (alongside Michelle Yeoh) and Burke is locked in a secondary role? He probably won't shut up about it when it finally comes out on Prime Video.

Like A Dragon developer locks in an RGG Summit for September, leaving fans pining for a new Judgement or Yakuza: Dead Souls remake

Like A Dragon/Yakuza series developer RGG Studio has locked in an RGG Summit for September 20, the same date we got its fall RGG Summit last year, and seems set to reveal . Naturally, fans have been quick to start speculating/wishing into existence stuff they'd like to see the studio whip out.

The date of the Summit looks to be a bit of an interesting one, with RGG personnel, including studio head Masayoshi Yokoyama previously having said during a July live stream that its next game would be unveiled during this year's Tokyo Game Show, which is set to run from September 26 to 29. Yes, that's the week after this summit.

Naturally, this has prompted a bit of fan confusion as to how RGG might handle that new game announcement it'd hinted at, given that the dates would look to rule out simply using the Summit to build on any big TGS announcement by, for example, providing more details or showing a trailer. So, it remains to be seen what the studio has up its sleeves, but it seems like it'd be a bizarre choice to schedule the Summit for a week beforehand if RGG was holding out on a big reveal, so it wouldn't be surprising to see that initial next game announcement maybe come at the Summit instead, with more details at TGS.

Metaphor ReFantazio effortlessly nails fantasy world-building, and proves Atlus can go toe-to-toe with Dragon Quest or Final Fantasy… and maybe even out-do them

In my humble opinion, the mark of a good game is one that lets you obsess over food. If I can wander into a fantasy RPG and start salivating over the food assets, hearing the phantom voice of Anthony Bordain in my head as I go and sit with the locals in their caff of choice and chow down on some scrumptious-looking brunch, I’m going to have far more patience for the hours of grinding I’ll likely need to do to get into the meat of the experience.

Good news, then. Metaphor ReFantazio is obsessed with food. Smitten with it, maybe. In a recent demo, hosted by Sega and Atlus, I got to play the opening few hours of the game, and then another section of the game about 20 hours in (give or take). And yep, the food jumped out at me the most.

Metaphor doesn’t just use meals as an excuse to pass time or as a cheap mechanic to level your team up; it seems like a genuinely fleshed out, meaty part of the game. This is Atlus' first fantasy world using the SMT/Persona formula, and the developer has even dedicated a member of staff to making sure the moment-to-moment feeling of the world is up to snuff.

Thanks to mods, a Skyrim streamer is now basically vlogging their playthrough live from Tamriel as a Dragonborn influencer

Ever natter to yourself while you're playing Skyrim? It's ok, we all do it, even if it's just yelling expletives whenever we're playing on legendary difficulty and get ambushed by a dragon while overcumbered. Now, though, a Twitch streamer's taken this kind of thing to the next level, by turning their broadcasts into a live vlog from Tamriel thanks to a mod that lets them voice the Dragonborn in real time.

Add in the fact that their Twitch chat's able to voice NPCs in the game, and you've got a recipie for a fun playthrough, if not a very lore-friendly one.

The streamer in question, Blurbs, had already drawn a lot of attention when they managed to perfect having random stream watchers insult them and generally talk bollocks through the mouths of everyone from Dark Brotherhood assassins to children eariler this year, and now they're back with a mod which lets them voice the Dragonborn live as they play, simply by talking into their mic.

The Borderlands movie is already getting a digital release just three weeks after it released in cinemas, which can only be a good thing, right?

Borderlands hasn't even been in cinemas for a month, and Lionsgate has already confirmed that it's getting a digital release this week.

The Borderlands movie is not what I, or anyone else I think, would call good. I would call it very bad in fact, I did so in my review of the film, and unsurprisingly, the video game adaptation went on to bomb at the box office, opening with $16 million on a $115 million budget, which is, to put it bluntly, abysmal. Clearly this result didn't best please Lionsgate either, as yesterday the production company announced that the premium video and on-demand release of the film will be coming later this week, August 30. As a reminder, the film only came out on August 9, meaning it's available digitally just three weeks after it was released.

You'll be able to buy the film for $25, or rent it for 48-hours, which will set you back $20. Obviously buying it is the better deal of the two, but if you ask me, don't bother with either and wait until it ends up on a streaming service, where you can say "oh, Borderland's on Netflix now" before promptly scrolling through all the other shows and movies before deciding you can't be bothered and hop back on Twitter. It'll still be a better use of your time.

Goat Simulator 3 somehow wasn't already on Nintendo Switch, but the comedy sim is finally coming to the platform later today

Wish you could play Goat Simulator 3 on the go? I've got great news, as it was announced during today's Nintendo Direct that the comedy sim is coming to Switch.

As always, no, you didn't miss Goat Simulator 2, as 3 is actually 2, because there is no 2. Simple, right? Not really, but what is simple is that the game is finally coming to Nintendo Switch digitally later today, as confirmed during today's Nintendo Direct. An exact time hasn't been confirmed as of yet, so if you're desperate to cause havoc as a goat and other animals in a not quite sim game, you'll just need to keep your eyes peeled. For those that prefer physical releases, you'll be able to pick this one up sometime in November, though again, an exact release date wasn't confirmed.

Goat Simulator 3 is already a couple of years old now, having first released back in 2022 across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PC, and iOS and Android. Why it's taken so long to release on Switch, I'm not sure, especially considering it's on mobile devices already, but hey ho, better late than never as they say. Much like its previous release, you can still headbutt, lick, and explore everything across the game's setting. There's character customisation options including lots of different clothes, and you'll be able to play it in online or couch co-op, which is always a plus.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 looks to be giving fans everything they want in its first trailer - Keanu Reeves, sad Shadow backstory, classic music and all

After an incredibly long wait, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 finally has its first trailer, and it's looking like an absolute doozy for fans of the series.

It had been starting to look like Sonic 3 was never going to come out, given that it's out in four months, but Paramount finally dropped a trailer for it today, showing off Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles finally working together as the ever-loveable Team Sonic. And best of all, we finally got our first look at Shadow the Hedgehog in motion - who yes, is in fact voiced by the one and only Keanu Reeves. The film essentially looks to be something of an adaptation of Sonic Adventure 2, though on this occasion Sonic and co are having to team up with Eggman to take on Shadow. Presumably that'll all change come the end of the film, because Shadow has to have his anti-hero arc, but we'll see!

It being a Sonic Adventure 2 adaptation means that yes, Maria is in it, Shadow's best friend, who is also an actual child that gets shot in the original games. The trailer sure does make it look like Maria dies, but how brutally that transpires in the actual film, I don't know, but again I imagine it'll be more of an offscreen situation. Eggman's grandfather Gerald Robotnik also shows up a couple of times, so I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up being the main villain too (in SA2, he's dead, but ends up kind of being the main bad guy due to him making the "ultimate weapon").

Infinity Nikki is just a nice open world, dress-up game with some real heart - so what’s the catch?

Okay imagine this. A 26-year-old big, bearded man walks through Gamescom - having drunk three Red Bulls and smoked five cigarettes - and stumbles towards the Infinity Nikki booth. It's this massive, adorable set-up with rows of PCs along cutesy white booths. I hop right in, finding myself in control of a young lady, as well as her smug cat companion sitting in the basket of a rainbow-coloured bicycle. The proceeding hour has me create new dresses to wear, catch bugs, and clean various cats on the street. This might be the most out of place I've ever felt previewing a video game.

And yet, in spite of myself and my pretty firmly established tastes, Infinity Nikki seems to be a real sleeper hit at Gamescom. It's an odd package, a blend of Genshin Impact's open world exploration and Barbie's generation-spanning appeal to kids who like dressing up dolls. You play as a mystical stylist called Nikki, in a world that seems to unashamedly revolve around creating cute outfits.

One of the biggest cards in Nikki's tailor-made sleeves is how it looks. Infinity Nikki is a gorgeous game, with vast open landscapes, rich forests, and glistening water. On a macro scale it's a looker, but what's especially rad is the finer details are lusciously extravagant too. Zooming in on Nikki's various outfits shows the stitching in the fabric, with apparent visual differences between material used. It's nuts.

I hope you aren't already sick of live-action anime adaptations, as Crunchyroll and Sony are certainly thinking hard about making more of them

It's sounding like more live-action anime projects are likely on the way, as Crunchyroll and Sony are interested in developing some.

The superhero well isn't exactly dry, as there's a whole ocean of IP to adapt from, but for Marvel, apart from its big success with Deadpool & Wolverine, the MCU has been waning in popularity since the release of Avengers: Endgame. That could be part of a broader superhero fatigue, James Gunn's new DCU will be the real test of that, but Hollywood quickly moved on to video game adaptations, with movies like the Sonic the Hedgehog pair of films and the Super Mario Bros. Movie all doing very well, and shows like The Last of Us and Fallout proving very popular. But there's another IP mine that Hollywood is clearly interested in tapping: anime.

We've already seen it with the live-action One Piece adaptation, which has done incredible well, and Shang-Chi director Destin Daniel Cretton is currently working on a Naruto movie - there was also those bad live-action Cowboy Bebop show, Death Note movie, and Ghost in the Shell adaptation, but still, clearly anime is where it's at next alongside video games). So it shouldn't be surprising to hear that Sony and Crunchyroll are having discussions about more live-action adaptations.

Get ready for some big screen shipping, because Jujutsu Kaisen season 2's best episodes are getting the compilation movie treatment

Get ready to take a trip to the cinema, SatoSugu fans (and possibly a flight too), as Jujutsu Kaisen's Hidden Inventory arc is getting a compilation movie.

Jujutsu Kaisen season 2 was some of the best anime I've seen in a while, and while I'm extra fond of certain episodes in particular, it's the season's first arc, Hidden Inventor/ Premature Death, that's the clear standout. From the slice-of-life-esque opening, to the ridiculously high quality of all five episodes, to the emotional beats that absolutely devastate you, it's an arc that could easily work as its own self-contained series. And clearly enough other people feel similarly, as over the week, the anime's official Twitter account announced that the short arc is being turned into a compilation movie, with a planned release of sometime in 2025.

Unfortunately, those are all the details available right now, but hey, you could always just rewatch Hidden Inventory to get all your Gojo-Geto shipping needs sorted in the meantime. Compilation movies aren't all that uncommon for popular anime, particularly for series with short episode counts, and considering how long the Shibuya Incident arc is in season 2, Hidden Inventory feels like the perfect arc to cut into a film. Occasionally these films have newly added scenes and touched up animation, but don't hold me to it on this front, as it doesn't always happen. There's also zero word on whether the film will even be released outside of Japan, so you might want to consider saving up for flights and hotels just so you can see last year's biggest anime ship on the big screen.

Oh dear, Concord's launch numbers are even worse than 2023's disastrous Gollum, so where does that leave PlayStation and its push for live-service?

The latest PlayStation-published live-service shooter Concord is here, and launch numbers are looking pretty bad so far.

When it comes to concurrent player counts, numbers don't always matter, particularly for single-player games, but live-service titles are a different story. Valve's new hero shooter Deadlock, which it finally officially revealed last week, had a concurrent player count peak of 89,000 just yesterday, according to SteamDB, a very impressive figure for a game that isn't even out yet. However, while it's been playable for a little while now, as long as you've got an invite, this weekend did have an actual launch for another live-service hero shooter, Concord. Except, its Steam numbers are not doing so good, amassing only 697 players at one time on the game's launch day.

Numbers just got worse over the weekend, when you'd expect more players to login to check it out, but nope, Saturday was worse than Friday, and Sunday worse than Saturday. That Friday launch figure is also pretty upsetting for another reason: it's smaller than last year's absolute trainwreck, and studio ruining, The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, which has a peak of 758 players (which it received when it launched and subsequently never topped).

Star Wars Outlaws Review: a tale of thieves that's full of borrowed mechanics

Sabacc cards on the table first, right: Star Wars Outlaws won’t win many Game of the Year awards. There are a lot of reasons for this, not least because there have been other major releases this year which have been bolder, better marketed, or which have advanced the medium in some exciting way. Other major releases where the enemy AI isn't comically thick. Add to that the general drag factor of the Ubisoft Open World Malaise we all have to varying degrees, and its gong prospects seem about as convincing as Anakin and Padme’s chemistry. But you absolutely shouldn’t care about that, because it slaps.

Mechanically, there’s honestly nothing in Outlaws which you haven’t seen before. It’s a big greatest hits package of Open World Things (with “climbing towers to unfog the map” mercifully left off the track listing, like Shiny Happy People but for sadists). It’ll evoke everything from Assassin’s Creed to Red Dead Redemption with its heady mix of urban wheeler-dealing, open world joyriding, tense stealth, and close-quarters combat. It’s got Tomb Raider style dangly climbing and a bewildering array of upgrades to unlock for your vehicles and equipment, all of which require some kind of task to be completed before they become available – most often they’re skill challenges, but many of them are proper sidequests, forays into enemy bases to steal unique parts or investigations as to the whereabouts of Skill Tree Expert No. 8. That sort of thing.

There’s a lot to get on with. As one would expect. And those of us who prefer sneaking around to a straight fight are well catered for, as it’s possible to complete almost any objective without raising any alarms. Most of the time you can go in blasting as well, if you like. The game will rarely penalise you for being loud, and most Situations are possible to get out of with a bit of quick thinking. Most actions will, though, have some kind of effect on the reputation system, particularly when you’re doing contract work, which is a constant procedurally-generated job system that you’ll earn most of your cash from, and is also the means via which you will ingratiate yourself to the worst people on whichever planet you’re on.

You're probably going to be waiting on The Witcher 4 for a while, so it's a good thing the original author just finished a new book

The Witcher 4 is almost definitely still years away, but if you're a fan of the books the games are based on, there's some good news.

It's pretty unclear how far away The Witcher 4 is, that's just the nature of game development these days, though CD Projekt Red has at least made it clear that the upcoming sequel is "the most advanced" of its projects. Production is meant to be starting this year at least, so hopefully it's only a few years away at the very least. Still, considering The Witcher 3 is almost decade old, that's quite the long wait for something new from the beloved action RPG. There'll certainly be plenty of Witcher fans out there that are just interested in the games, but for those of you that have gone as far as ready the books, the original author has some welcome news: he's finished another book.

As spotted by PC Gamer, Andrzej Sapkowski recently spoke with French fantasy magazine Chimères, where he shared that he doesn't really have any plans for the series going forward, but he has wrapped up his latest Witcher book. "I have finished the book," he said. "It took me maybe two years - something like this." Sapkowski technically finished the Witcher books back in 1999, though did later come back to Geralt with another one in 2013, set in between the events of the original books. In 2018 at Warsaw Comic Con, Sapkowski said the story is finished, so presumably this new book will be filling in some gaps too.

Not sure why Silent Hill 2 is getting remade before the first one? Konami has a plan, apparently

Much like Capcom starting its Resident Evil remakes with the second game, Konami has done the same with Silent Hill - but the question is, why?

You would think that the logical way to remake a series is starting from the beginning, but when Konami finally revealed that the Silent Hill series was making a comeback, it did so by announcing a couple of new games, and of course, a remake of fan favourite Silent Hill 2 from Bloober Team. It's that fan favourite point that is probably a big reason as to why it has received the remake treatment first, but in a recent interview with Rock Paper Shotgun, Bloober Team's creative director Mateusz Lenart and lead producer Maciej Głomb offered some more in-depth reasons as to why it was that the second game is kicking off the Silent Hill revival.

"I think Silent Hill 2 just matches our DNA way better," Lenart explained. "It's much more emotional, a much more personal story than, for example, the first game or the third game. And we at Bloober were always fans of telling personal stories about people's experiences, people's feelings and how they go through them. Not so much about, you know, occultism and things from other worlds, right? So I think that was the main reason, basically."

Yes, it looks like Crash Bandicoot 5 was real, and it apparently would have featured the exact crossover you've all been wanting for years

It's been previously claimed that Crash Bandicoot 5 was in the works, and now a new report has shed some very purple light on the game.

Back in July, a developer that previously worked at Crash Bandicoot 4: About Time developer Toys For Bob claimed that Crash 5 was in the works, though didn't share all that much about it. They did note that some day people will hear about it and "it's gonna break hearts," and that certainly feels accurate, as in a new video from Liam Robertson at Did You Know Gaming, some details have been shared about the cancelled Crash 5 - the most notable aspect of the game being that it would have been a crossover with none other than the bandicoot's PS1 co-star Spyro the Dragon.

Yeah, right off the bat it sounds like you'll need to get some superglue to mend that broken heart of yours, as while Crash and Spyro have had some crossovers here and there, they've never had one that's a classic 3D platformer like their respective games. According to the report, the game would have been a direct sequel to Crash 4, with concept art and story details showing some classic villains as well as some new ones, and would borrow from the PS2 entry Crash Twinsanity.

Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater is a faithful remake of the action espionage classic, and a statement of intent for Konami's stewardship of the series - hands-on preview

Konami is back in a big way lately, and a lot of the world's newly recharged notice of the Japanese publisher comes down to the upcoming Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater. My time with Konami's other modern trilpe-A title, Silent Hill 2, was a hit, and while my time with MGS: Delta was short but sweet, it also did not disappoint.

While no release date has been penciled in as of yet, the original game’s 20th anniversary rolls around on November 17, so fans can only hope that Delta is in their hands by then. In anticipation of the release, Konami invited me to play 90 minutes of the Snake Eater remake, and so far, it looks like a faithful remake of Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater with even more Hollywood flair, intended for new and old audiences alike.

My preview began with the grand opening of Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, concluding not longer after you meet with The Boss. This segment sees Snake baptised as Naked Snake as he descends — in a more epic fashion than ever before — into the USSR in an attempt to complete the Virtuous Mission.

A new Witcher 3 mod lets Geralt get his Assassin's Creed Black Flag on and pilot a full-size ship that I'm dubbing 'The Jankdaw'

Sailing around in a little boat and occasionally sinking because you couldn't be bothered to get up and kill the sirens trying to break it apart is a key part of what makes exploration - or just commuting between missions - in The Witcher 3 a blast. Though, if you've ever thought Geralt could do with a vessel that could safely store all the drowner heads he keeps in his saddle bags, a new mod will let you have a go at sailing a full-size ship.

Yep, this is another one of those pet projects that the game's REDkit modding tools have made possible, and far from the first maritime-based one, with another mod having restored the game's cut boat races back in July.

TrickArrant's 'Sail Big Ship' not only boasts one of the best 'does what it says on the tin' names on Nexus Mods, it lets Gerry from the Rivia climb aboard pilotable versions of those big frigates that sit in the harbours of places like Novigrad as static objects in the base game. You'll just have to park your immersion at the door a bit, since, in its own creator's words, it boasts "quite a bit of jank".

Diablo 4 is free to play this weekend on Steam, and Blizzard keeps creating more reasons to convince you to dive in

It’s pretty easy to be excited about Diablo 4 right now. The game is currently in its best form ever, following the fundamental loot and itemisation overhaul from Season 4, and the new endgame activities and quality of life improvements that arrived with Season 5.

Over the horizon, we’re anticipating yet another major shakeup in the form of Season 6, which kicks off alongside the release of the game’s first expansion, Vessel of Hatred. So it makes sense that Blizzard would want new players to jump into the game right now, and the developer timed this particular free weekend especially well.

Helldivers 2 bossman Pilestedt rocks up on Discord for the first time in a little bit to answer about ten million questions and reflect on the criticism

It's been a little bit of time since Helldivers 2 players have heard much from former Arrowhead CEO and still very much chief creative officer Johan Pilestedt, with the developer seemigly having enjoyed some very well-earned time off. Now, however, he's made a bit of a return in rather grand fashion, by answering Discord questions from everyone and their mum.

Naturally, the flak the studio has faced from players following the deployment of the most recent batch of weapon balancing changes - the one Arrowhead announced that much-discussed 60-day plan of changes that it's already acting upon in reponse to - came up, as it has in 99% of dev chats about the game over the last little while.

"It's hard. It's a tricky situation. The criticism is valid, but it causes low morale, and low morale causes slow development speed. Talk about negative spiral," Pilestedt said in response to a player asking how the game's developers are currently feeling. "I think it's important for us to reiterate to the team that criticism happens because people care, " he added in a separate response, "The worst thing would have been if we fucked up and oo one cared."

The best game with the most pointless feature

There's now a premium, extended version of this podcast that you can get as a VG247 paid subscriber - check out our Support Us page for more info. Doing so helps ensure that we can keep making the show! But don't worry if that's not for you, the main show will always be free.

Sometimes video games include the most random things, but who doesn't love that stuff? We all get excited when you can flush a toilet or turn on a tap, even though these are the most mundane actions possible in the 'real world'. Jim, in his wisdom (?), decided that these neat little features are pointless and made everyone pick the most useless of all found in the best video game. How did this go? Well, you'll find out when you listen to this week's episode of the Best Games Ever Podcast.

To help make these 30 minutes or so more tolerable we are this week joined by everyone's favourite dated video game journo d-lister, Steve Burns. If you know who he is, brilliant, if you don't, he's hard to explain so we won't bother.

Fallout co-creator Tim Cain believes that criticising capitalism was "never the point" of the series, it's actually just the whole war never changing thing

Is Fallout supposed to make you think about society? I'd argue that, at its best, it is, with capitalism being an obvious candidate to explore, given the mainline series' unflinchingly corporate American atomic age-inspired setting and the whole resource war that led up to the bombs being dropped. Though, according to co-creator Tim Cain, that isn't the central crux of Fallout theme-wise.

The veteran developer has said as much in a comment (thanks, PC Gamer) on the latest video posted to his YouTube channel - which I'd definitely reccomend checking to pretty much anyone who's interested in games and how they get made - as part of a response to a fan asking for his thoughts on reading Fallout "as a critique on capitalist/corporative greed (Vault-Tec and others) and on excessive militarization".

"Critique of capitalism was never the point of Fallout," Cain wrote, "In fact, the game went out of its way to mention that other countries like China were also behaving terribly. If anything, Fallout is a comment that war is inevitable given basic human nature." So yep, the whole war never changes line that, rather ironically, is more of a corporate slogan than anything else nowadays.

As Helldivers 2 players blast through five million Bile Titans, Arrowhead reiterates that making things fun is "an explicit company target" now

Helldivers 2's latest Major Order, at least in theory, is one of those one people really like. Seriously, there are a bunch of things to kill a big number of, and if that's not enough, one of Arrowhead's community managers has just reiterated that having fun on the menu is "an explicit company target" when it comes to the game.

You can't say the studio’s been slacking when it comes to enacting that 60-day plan of changes to help get it outlined following the whole Escalation of Freedom debacle either, having deployed two patches in the last two days. Sure, one was an emergency whipping out of a single fix, but that'll have taken plenty of work.

One of the bugs Arrowhead still has on its hit list is one that's seen Bile Titans not taking head damage properly on occasion, and some players reckon the latest Major Order could well have the side objective of helping the developer gather some more data to help eliminate that issue.

Starfield finally got its first land vehicle this week, via a free update Bethesda revealed at Gamescom Opening Night Live alongside the Shattered Space DLC’s release date. While it almost definitely won’t convert you if you weren’t already interested in playing more of the game, it is at least spawning an inevitable array of interesting vehicle mods.

As soon as that teaser for the Rev-8 buggy dropped and we all saw it doing some skids to the kind of tune all ‘cor, would you look at this cool thing’ car montages opt for, this was always going to be the case, but the speed’s still remarkable.

Since the buggy update dropped on August 20 and everyone got to work running over half the population of New Atlantis in the kind of hit-and-run spree usually reserved for Trevor Phillips or Homer Simpson, a fairly bustling vehicle mod scene has fired up over on Starfield’s Nexus page.

Destin Daniel Cretton might be making his Naruto movie before a Shang-Chi sequel, and its first writer trusts him

Like it or not, a live-action Naruto movie seems to be coming from Hollywood after spending many years in development hell. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton is currently attached to the project, and while he might have the directing sauce needed to pull off a flashy manga/anime adaptation, we're understandably worried about such a tricky transition regardless. Now, the movie's original writer is trying to calm fans down.

Entertainment Weekly recently talked to scribe Tasha Huo, the showrunner for Netflix's upcoming Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft animated series, and of course, tried to extract new information regarding Naruto. To their surprise (and everyone else's), she actually spoke at length about the process of putting that movie together so far.

While Cretton is now part of Hollywood's 'big leagues' thanks to Shang-Chi's reasonable success in 2021 - just as we were starting to exit the worst of the Covid pandemic - his background doing original work is extensive, and he's also found time to continue to produce shorts and TV series after his Marvel movie found an audience. Huo praised that aspect of his career, saying "his own writing and storytelling" is "very personal and relatable" to viewers before teasing the main idea behind the Naruto movie is to focus on the characters and what they go through: "This is definitely a movie that comes at it from a love of who Naruto is and that character and his relationships."

Don't worry, Mafia: The Old Country's missing Italian voice acting isn't a weird oversight, 2K's going full Sicilian for extra Cosa Nostra authenticity

Mafia: The Old Country doesn't have Italian voice acting, but 2K's now revealed the reason behind what initially looked to be a rather perplexing omission - Hangar 13's elected to go for Sicilian instead.

In case you missed it, The Old Country was revealed right at the end of Gamescom Opening Night Live 2024, with a teaser trailer confirming a 2025 release window and offering a taste of the game's depiction of the mod underworld in 1900s Sicily.

Not long after that showing, fans checking out the game's Steam store listing noticed that it didn't have full audio for Italian checked in its list of supported languages, with English, French, German, Spanish, Czech, and Russian all having that box ticked. Given the thing's set in Italy, people were a bit confused, but it's ok, 2K's now stepped in to clarify the situation.

Monster Hunter Wilds makes male and female armor sets available to all players, internet at large cries out in joy

Take note, other developers: this is how you do it. Capcom has removed gender-restricted armor sets from Monster Hunter in the upcoming PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC title, Monster Hunter Wilds.

As show in the developer diary streams that were broadcast live from Gamescom 2024 today (and confirmed in a hands-on demo by yours truly), Capcom has decided to bin off the binary armor choices for female and male hunters. Now, no matter what character you decide to make when you create your avatar for the game, you will be able to equip all variations of armor without any restriction.

Typically, Monster Hunter games have locked you into one of two variants depending on the make-up of your custom character, but in the upcoming title, every single player will be able to equip an A or B variant of each gear set. I even experimented with mixing and matching; it was possible to use the ‘male’ version of a Chatucabra head and the ‘female’ version of the Chatucabra body in the same loadout. Ergo; you can mix and match.

Monster Hunter Wilds gameplay preview: creating wounds, and then ripping them open, may be the best thing Capcom has ever done for the series’ combat flow

As we’ve previously reported, Gamescom 2024 is the first place that the public can play Monster Hunter Wilds. Luckily for me, then, that I was pretty much first in line to play the public demo of the game – and I’m here to tell you that the combat flow is even faster than it was in Monster Hunter World, and even more dynamic than it was in Monster Hunter Rise.

The main difference series veterans are going to notice here is the additional beat that comes to the flow of combat in terms of inflicting wounds on monsters. In the past, your fights tend to follow a fairly strict flowchart: encounter a monster, attack it, break a part or two, pursue it to a new locale, break another part, pursue it again, and capture or slay. I’m obviously boiling things down to their most basic, there, but that’s the gist.

In Wilds, there’s a new mechanic that Capcom peppers into this familiar pattern that is much more reactive and dynamic than what the series has done before: wounds. Before you break a monster part, you can cause wounds to appear on it by focusing your attacks on one area. The single-player demo saw us take on the Chutacabra (similar to a Tetsucabra, but less rocky and more ogre-like), and since I’m a Sword and Shield user, I was tanking the front part of the body and rolling to attack its forelegs and face.

Gamescom Opening Night Live 2024 brings us a fresh look at Diablo 4's Vessel of Hatred expansion

As promised, Blizzard brought a few of its games to Gamescom 2024 to celebrate the show, and bring us new nuggets to munch on. Now that the studio is part of the larger Microsoft family, Blizzard’s games occupy this awkward spot where they can clearly stand on their own, but also need to bolster Xbox’s line-up.

Game industry politics aside, what the studio brought today was certainly worth tuning in for, especially when it came to Diablo 4.

Arena Breakout: Infinite targets a full release by the end of 2024

Tactical extraction shooter, Arena Breakout: Infinite, entered Early Access last week. Though the recent beta tests were held on Steam, the launch is only available through the game’s official website.

The plan has always been for Arena Breakout to launch on Steam, however, and today during Gamescom 2024 Opening Night Live, the developer shared new details about the future of the game.

The coolest-looking game from The Game Awards 2021, Arc Raiders, might actually finally come out after all, maybe, in 2025

Remember Arc Raiders? It was first revealed during The Game Awards 2021 and instantly started creating a lot of buzz... and then it just sort of disappeared.

But today, out of absolutely nowhere, it has risen back up to the surface to show a pretty cool trailer that has once again got people talking. At Gamescom Opening Night Live, the trailer revealed that the game is still kicking and screaming somewhere in development hell, and it's coming to PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC next year. In theory.

I've written extensively about the game in the past, and everything I loved about it back then still looks cool now - and it's even had a bit of a graphics upgrade.

Dying Light: The Beast revealed at Gamescom Opening Night Live 2024, following that 'The Beast Is Coming' tease

Dying Light: The Beast has been revealed during Gamescom Opening Night Live 2024, following that 'The Beast is Coming' teaser from the other day.

If you've no idea what that last thing was referring to, it was Geoff Keighley posting a live-action teaser for a horror game, which featured a woman generally having a bad time in the woods, and ended with the crime against phrasing that is 'The Beast Is Coming'. Well, we now know what that was all about.

What looks to be a new standalone Dying Light game was introduced in somewhat atypical fashion for the series, with a group of professional-looking soldiers making a careful approaching the lair of an unidentified (but definitely unfriendly) target. Naturally, all hell breaks loose when it quickly emerges that the squad before them has been quite literally ripped to shreds.

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is seemingly the next Xbox title coming to PS5, but not until next year

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is reportedly set to arrive in PS5 not long after it initially releases later this year as a timed exclusive. Yep, it's looking like the game about exploring crypts, punching Nazis and doing those same things in the opposite order may well be the next title to go multiplatform as part of that new strategy Xbox has begun employing in 2024.

According to podcaster and industry insider Nate The Hate, Machine Games's whip-swinging adventure title will only have a short window of Xbox exclusivity before being chased by a boulder onto PS5 too.

"MachineGames' Indiana Jones and the Great Circle will release on Xbox & PC this holiday (Dec) as a timed console exclusive, they tweeted, "After this timed-exclusive window expires, Indiana Jones & the Great Circle is planned to come to PlayStation 5 in the first half of 2025." Their claim appears to match a report by The Verge back in February, which cited Indy as a title that Microsoft was considering bringing to PS5 "some months" after its release, following the same kind of short exclusivity window outlined here.

Black Myth: Wukong is currently Steam's most played game as it continues to break records

As I write this, Black Myth: Wukong, the action adventure from China’s Game Science studio, is the most played game on Steam by player count. There are currently 1,400,932 players in-game (with a peak of 1,443,570), surpassing the likes of Counter-Strike 2, Dota 2, PUBG and all the usual games that occupy Steam’s top five.

Wukong’s launch was already predicted to be strong, with the game being Steam’s number one seller for several weeks, but the concurrent player figures are quite staggering for a single-player, offline game.

“We did the best job that we could” Silent Hill 2 devs on the challenges of remaking beloved horror classic

The upcoming remake of Silent Hill 2 isn’t all that far away, with its release date set for October 8. As such, previews have been well underway as the game goes through the final stages of development and receives a final layer of polish.

While I talk about this at length in my preview, I didn’t have high expectations for a Silent Hill 2 remake. I was dreading it, to be frank. Much to my delight, though, Bloober Team has poured its heart, soul, and a lot of resources into the massive undertaking.

In conversation with lead producer, Maciej Glomb, and creative director, Mateusz Lenart, I asked a few questions about how they managed to achieve such an authentic portrayal of the original game while enhancing it for modern audiences, and what difficulties they may have faced.

Surprise, Hideo Kojima's back on the Death Stranding 2 actor tease shenanigans, and fans seem to have sussed this one out in record time

Bang. Hideo Kojima’s back. Well, back to tweeting out Death Stranding 2 teasers that consist of an image of a faceless actor with a question written over the top of them, imploring people to ask questions. Questions like who? Like how? And like what now?

Yep, at 9AM on a Monday during the week of a video games event — Gamescom, you might have heard about it — the developer’s posted a teaser image that may or may not be hinting at anything for that show. One thing’s for sure, fans are pretty certain they’ve worked out which actor’s mug the teaser features.

You can find this latest Kojima teaser, which to my knowledge is the first of this kind the director’s posted in a little while, below. Death Stranding 2’s marketing has been full of these, with the most memorable ones having come around the time Kojima Productions was telling everyone about Elle Fanning’s involvement in the game, via the same kind of ‘blank faced outline, here’s a question mark’ fashion as is being used here.

Diablo 4 patch has some no-brainer changes I can't believe took this long to make, boosts Infernal Hordes rewards

The first big-ish patch to arrive following the launch of Diablo 4’s fifth season is dropping tomorrow, August 20. Assuming you won’t be too busy keeping up with all the Gamescom Opening Night Live goings on, this one is actually going to get you to play.

Update 1.5.1 focuses on Infernal Hordes, the new endgame activity that’s the major feature the season is named after. It also has some quality of life changes that I genuinely thought were already in the game because of how basic they are.

Epic Games' free games have been working out great, but a lot of the store's exclusives "were not good investments" says CEO Tim Sweeney

Epic Games has been giving away free games every week for years now, which has apparently been going well - but the store's exclusives haven't done so well.

Valve doesn't exactly run a monopoly when it comes to buying digital games, but for the most part everyone knows that Steam is the defacto place to buy your PC games. Storefronts like GOG and Itch.io have their own niches, but Steam is still the place to be for most PC games, even if it is quite flawed. Then, in 2018, Epic Games decided it wanted a piece of the pie and opened up its own store, and it didn't do so without controversy, as many PC gamers were not a fan of it right off the bat. Six years on, the store is still around, but even still many don't like it.

Of course, Epic has tried a couple of tactics to encourage players to use its platform, like weekly free games, which it has given out every week since 2018, with certain seasons even offering daily free games. But in a recent press call (via PC Gamer), despite how costly that might be, Epic CEO Tim Sweeney shared that it's been a "very economical" user acquisition program.

Helldivers 2 cheaters might want to check on their pet fish, because Arrowhead has a humorously brutal punishment for those that hack the game

It turns out some Helldivers 2 players cheated in order to help complete the latest Major Order, and as a result their, uh, pet fish have been killed.

Helldivers 2 isn't exactly the hardest game in the world, but it's not like there isn't a good challenge to it either. Even still, as with any online game, there are some that just want to circumvent that challenge altogether, and as shared on the Helldivers 2 subreddit, an in-game message from Arrowhead notes that there were some cheaters, albeit this was delivered in-world as always. "Super Earth High Command has detected a large batch of counterfeit samples within the delivery of the last Major Order," reads the message.

"As is customary, Medals have been awarded to all Helldivers who honorably performed their duties, and the ones submitting false samples have had their pet fish summarily executed. Laboratories all across Super Earth space are attempting to filter out the false samples, but the expected scientific advances to combat the spread of the gloom have decreased significantly. As a result of this, worlds near the gloom have begun resettlement protocols."

Not sure about the new Famicom Detective Club? Maybe Emio can help put a smile on your face with three upcoming demos

Nintendo's first new Famicom Detective Club in over 30 years is getting three whole demos, and you'll be able to carry over your save data too.

About a third of the way through July, Nintendo started teasing something just a little bit scary. It was out of step with Nintendo's usual family friendly image, but a week on, the developer revealed that it was actually a brand new Famicom Detective Club game, the first new one in more than 30 years, as long as you're not counting the remakes of the original two games. Even better for fans of the cult classic, Yoshio Sakomoto, the designer of the NES games, and director of Super Metroid, has returned for the new instalment. You don't have that long to wait until it's out now, but ahead of the game's full release, Nintendo is releasing a trio of demos to get you on board as quickly as possible.

The first demo is coming tomorrow, August 19, and is the first chapter of the game in its entirety. Thankfully, you don't have to pay a single dime to play it, and what's better is that on August 22 and 27, two more chapters are coming, all of which are again free, essentially letting you play a big chunk of the game's opening section without putting a single penny down. Best of all, your progress will carry over to the full game when it is released on August 29, so don't worry about having to replay a bunch of stuff if you were thinking of picking it up anyway.

"Team Cherry is still cooking" - Geoff Keighley wants you to know you shouldn't expect Hollow Knight: Silksong at Gamescom Opening Night Live

Expecting to see Hollow Knight: Silksong at Gamescom Opening Night Live? You definitely shouldn't, as long as Geoff Keighley isn't lying to us.

With every single games showcase that is announced, there is always one game that you can spot in the replies: Hollow Knight: Silksong. It's no surprise, ever since its reveal as a standalone title in 2019, fans have been clamouring for a release date, and there hasn't been that many updates from Team Cherry since then. Back in 2022 it was at least confirmed that it would be coming to Xbox Game Pass day one, and in 2023 the official Xbox Twitter account much too confidently claimed it would be out the same year. Many showcases later, here we are over halfway through 2024, and there's still no indication as to when it might be released - but of course, that hasn't stopped fans asking if it'll show up next week at Gamescom Opening Night Live. The answer? No.

Yesterday, on his personal Twitter account, The Game Awards host Geoff Keighley said: "Just to get this out of the way, no Silksong on Tuesday at ONL. Team Cherry is still cooking." That'll obviously be disappointing for fans who had somehow convinced themselves that this was the one, but honestly feels pretty par for the course when it comes to Silksong at this point in time. Really, it'll be out when it's out, and there are constantly too many games these days anyway, so just play something else while you wait, alright?

Sega's next live-action movie? A fighting game that hasn't had a new entry in almost 30 years

Sega has another live-action movie on the way, but it's not Persona or anything you've likely heard of.

With superhero movies taking a little bit of a decline over the past couple of years, Hollywood has found a new well to dry up: video games. We've been seeing more and more adaptations in recent years, like The Last of Us, Fallout, and most recently, the incredibly awful Borderlands movie. Of course, one of the big ones that helped kick off the resurgence of video game films was 2020's Sonic the Hedgehog, a pretty good movie that made a lot of money. With its success came a sequel and a Knuckles spin-off show, and another film is due out this December, so clearly Sega is very happy with its live-action output. On top of that, Sega is also releasing a Yakuza TV series this coming October. And now, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter, its next live-action outing will be… uh, Eternal Champions?

I suspect that if you're like me and you're under the age of 35 this one probably won't be a title you're that familiar with, and I wouldn't blame you. Originally released in 1993 on the Sega Mega Drive, or Genesis for all you folks in the US, Eternal Champions was a fighting game made by Sega in an attempt to tap into Street Fighter 2 and Mortal Kombat's popularity. It sees different key figures throughout history pulled from their time by the titular Eternal Champion, each of whom were meant to die just before they were taken, offered the opportunity to take part in a tournament that will let them live on.

Supermassive is as on-form as ever with The Casting of Frank Stone, a Dead by Daylight spin-off for fans of lore and gore - hands-on preview

Even the briefest glance at promotional materials for The Casting of Frank Stone reveals that it is a story "from the world of Dead by Daylight". Nowhere is this more apparent than on the title screen of the game itself, where the franchise's name is up there equally as big and bold as the game's actual title.

But regardless of the IP it's being released under, make no mistake: The Casting of Frank Stone is a Supermassive game through and through. How you feel about playing it will probably have a lot more to do with how much you enjoy that studio's horror-flavoured adventure game stylings, than whether you're a fan of Behaviour Interactive's all-devouring horror IP toybox of an asymmetric online multiplayer.

I'm in the fortunate position of being a fan of both DBD and Supermassive, with a particularly hyperfixational relationship with the latter's already extensive catalogue of interactive movie-style horror games, so naturally I'm eating well on this one. And while minute-to-minute this may be mainly one for the Supermassive fans, DBD lore nerds would also be remiss to sleep on it just because it plays differently from the main game.

It’s a Roblox brat summer: Charli XCX is coming to one of Roblox’s biggest games, Dress to Impress - here’s what you need to know

There are two things taking the internet by storm as of late, and that’s Roblox’s dress-up game, Dress to Impress, and Charli XCX’s album of the summer, BRAT. And in a collaboration that nobody saw coming, but fans of both will no doubt welcome, Dress to Impress is receiving a BRAT-themed update on August 17, 2024.

That’s tomorrow, so cancel any BRAT summer-related plans you may have had this weekend and prepare for a new range of clothing items and accessories to show off on the catwalk in Dress to Impress instead.

The collaboration was announced via X (formerly Twitter) on 12 August with a suitably-green teaser trailer showing off the new clothing options — a cropped tee emblazoned with the BRAT logo being the staple of the collaboration — and an all-new catwalk. Whether or not we’ll see the BRAT-walk in-game tomorrow is uncertain, but one thing we can be sure of is that more models will be slaying harder than they usually are.

How rich is its world, and engaging its action?

As for our own review, it's a touch delayed as we're playing on the console version rather than PC (which the vast majority of these day-1 reviews are using), so our review needs a little more time in the oven. But you're still able to look through a list of review scores and outlets below for a general idea on how the game has been recieved.

Fallout: Nuevo Mexico devs confirm the big New Vegas mod is "no longer on hold" and "in a good state", but there's still no word about a release date

The development of DLC-sized Fallout New Vegas mod Fallout Nuevo Mexico is no longer on hold, with a member of the team telling VG247 that the project is currently “in a good state” as work on the mod has resumed.

Fallout: Nuevo Mexico has been in the works since 2021, and promises a Fallout adventure set in and around the state of New Mexico just five years after the events of Interplay’s original Fallout game, with plenty of classic Fallout mechanics and vibes weaved in. The mod was put on hiatus earlier this year, having ‘gone dark’ back in April, with its social media and YouTube presences being largely set to private. Its creators now say the project is back on the road, but aren’t promising when it’ll come out.

After Nuevo Mexico's head of public relations J.K-Serling posted a brief update to the mod’s Discord server on July 10, stating “project is no longer on hold”, and followed that up with an image of a box with a Vault-Tec logo washed up on a beach (captioned “a saucerful of secrets”) on August 8, we reached out them for more information.

Helldivers 2 players hellbent on seeing Super Earth fall have turned their movement into rebel faction roleplay, and some want Arrowhead to make it an actual thing

Helldivers 2 is and has always been one big parody of itself narrative wise, with Arrowhead playing into the absurdity that comes with all of its Starship Troopers-esque declarations of patriotic fervour. The game’s community has bought into this in pretty hilarious roleplaying style plenty of times, but its latest instance might be the most unexpected yet.

First of all, you’ve no doubt heard about the whole backlash that’s been going on to some of the the Escalation of Freedom update’s balancing changes, which Arrowhead’s now issued a whole plan in response to. Well, that snowballed into an in-game protest from frustrated players attempting to let the Automatons reach Super Earth in the game’s galactic war, and said protest’s now taken on a whole life of its own.

If you head to the Helldivers 2 subreddit today, you’ll likely see a bunch of posts mentioning a group known as the “Chaosdivers”, with this seemingly being the name players have come up with for the movement among them which wants to see Super Earth fall, having lost faith in the original Helldivers’ cause.

How long has Daredevil: Born Again been in the works? Charlie Cox was contacted in 2020 and then got ghosted for two years

Deadpool & Wolverine might have been a huge hit for Marvel Studios, but it's fair to say the Marvel Cinematic Universe needs to wow us consistently a few more times before we can claim we're in the 'Good Zone' again. All eyes are now set on 2025's releases, and those include Daredevil: Born Again, which is coming to Disney Plus and seemingly has been in the works for longer than we thought.

During the last D23 event, Daredevil: Born Again stars Charlie Cox (Matt Murdock aka Daredevil) Vincent D'Onofrio (Wilson Fisk aka Kingpin) chatted with People and unveiled some of what happened behind the scenes as the original Netflix series was cancelled and nothing happened for a few years despite an unexpected call from Marvel honcho Kevin Feige in 2020.

"It wasn't until midway through 2020 that we got a phone call from [President of Marvel Studios] Kevin [Feige] saying that they were interested in bringing the characters back...not even in the show at that point, just bringing the characters into MCU," Cox explained. Remember that Marvel Studios was still figuring out how the post-Endgame MCU would look like past phase four at that point, so it makes sense that maybe the initial plan was to bring their characters into an entirely different project, such as a Spider-Man movie.
