Pokemon Scarlet and Violet Players Find Neat Sonia Easter Egg

Japanese Pokemon Scarlet and Violet players have found an Easter egg they believe references Pokemon Sword and Shield's chronology. It may also be a direct nod to the character Sonia, who plays a key role in the earlier Nintendo Switch games. It's rare for Game Freak to acknowledge the chronology of events in the Pokemon franchise, instead preferring an ambiguity that allows for a more malleable timeline. Yet this Pokemon Scarlet and Violet Easter egg is very direct with its implications.

Diablo 4 Players Are Already Unhappy With Microtransaction Prices

The reviews for Diablo 4 are out, and though the game is set to be a critical success, many players feel the microtransactions of its in-game shop are overpriced for a premium title. With the embargo officially lifted, the Diablo community has a much clearer picture of what to expect in their latest journey in Sanctuary beyond the Fractured Peaks. The open beta and server slam for Diablo 4 have certainly enticed players from a gameplay standpoint, but a major point of contention among fans has been the way Blizzard developed Diablo 4's monetization.

System Shock Remake review: A foundation for the new generation of immersive sims

It’s difficult to imagine a more daunting proposition for a remake than the original System Shock. It’s arguably the game that truly launched the greatest boom of immersive sims in history – a genre whose fans are notoriously demanding, despite never having really been able to come up with a universally agreed definition of what an 'immersive sim' even is. It’s a genre of such a specific time and place, games that possess intrinsic vibes of fat chunky keyboards, bulky cardboard boxes and 640x480 CRT screens. How do you channel that in an era of ultrawide monitors and digital only games? Does anybody even want it? Warren Spector himself, one of the key creative figures in the heyday of PC games about rifling through shelves and reading emails, couldn’t get a tumultuous System Shock 3 out the doorhttps://www.vg247.com/system-shock-3-tencent before the whole endeavour imploded. This isn’t developer Nightdive Studios first wrangle with the licence – after acquiring the IP in 2015, they promptly released System Shock: Enhanced Edition, a slightly prettied up version of the original optimised for modern systems. At the same time, it started development on what was intended to be a ground-up remake. Here we are, a full seven years of stop-start development, engine changes, shifts in overall direction, and scope bloat later, and it should be considered a miracle that the game has been released at all. Never mind the fact that it’s an absolutely groundbreaking work of visual design that elevates the original in every possible way without losing anything in the process. Read more

Xbox branded "cheeky" as it highlights 12 PlayStation Showcase titles coming to Xbox

It was a big night for PlayStation last night, huh? Metal Gear Solid, more Metal Gear Solid, cyberpunk-at-home sequel Ghostrunner 2, a release date for Assassin's Creed Mirage, Alan Wake 2 showing a descent into madness, and a massive, unexpected look at the exciting Dragon's Dogma 2. Given this was a massive Sony showcase (and the first one since 2021, no less), you'd be forgiven for thinking all of these games were PlayStation exclusives – or, at least, would come to the PS5 with special features or something. Alas, that's not the case. As pointed out in a cheeky tweet that flew out of the Xbox socials the second the showcase was over, 12 of the games included in the showcase will be coming to Xbox platforms, as well as PlayStation or PC. PlayStation Confirms New Handheld Device, But There's a Catch

Sony has finally confirmed its work on a new handheld PlayStation device during the PlayStation Showcase livestream, but it might not be what gamers were expecting. The latest PlayStation Showcase featured a mix of triple-A blockbusters and smaller indie titles, with much of the post-show discussion being centered around the likes of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and the newly-confirmed remake of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater.

Tears of the Kingdom received a year long delay just to focus on polish

It turns out that The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has been done for about a year, with the rest of that time being spent on just polish alone. Back in March of 2022, Nintendo made the decision to delay Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom out of its 2022 release window into spring 2023, where it's obviously now out in the wild (pun not intended). It had always been made clear that 2022 was the target release year for the game, but wasn't a guarantee, so the delay wasn't shocking. Now, according to The Washington Post's Gene Park, the reason for that delay wasn't because the game wasn't technically ready; it was to polish it up. Park recently spoke with Zelda series producer Eiji Aonuma as part of an interview with The Washington Post, but shared an anecdote that didn't make it into the final piece. "Eiji Aonuma said when he announced in March 2022 a delay for Zelda Tears of the Kingdom, the game was pretty much complete," Park shared in a tweet. "The last year was spent on polish, making sure the wild physics of the game just work." Read more

Absolutely everybody should play the Final Fantasy 16 demo – hands-on

At a recent hands-on for Final Fantasy 16, we got to play a good six hours of content from across the game. Though all from a work-in-progress build that Square Enix was careful to note had been specifically designed for the media tour, much of what we played appeared to be pretty much the final version of the game. You do this job for long enough and you get pretty good at identifying when something has been stitched together for a hands-on versus when it’s done – and this game appeared to be well and truly finished at this event, almost a full two months from release. There’s an air of confidence around how finished it is, in fact – I’ve been told that there’s no day-one patch to tighten things up, because it’s just not needed. The game is finished, polished, ready. It’s a stark contrast to Final Fantasy 15, which had a messy final preview that was followed by a last-minute polishing delay before the preview embargo even lifted. That’s the first major point I’d make about Final Fantasy 16, in fact. It’s clear that this is the most confident and complete main-line Final Fantasy game at launch since the PS2 era; it’ll match up to the excellent launch state of Final Fantasy 7 Remake. From a fit-and-finish perspective, I’d confidently say that quality is no longer a question. The conversation shifts, then, to the game as a work of art and design – and if people are going to be picking up what it’s putting down. Read more

Overwatch 2 director shares he wanted the shooter to return to its MMO origins

Overwatch 2 director Aaron Keller has discussed how the shooter series was "born from the ashes" of Project Titan following the cancellation of its Hero Mode. Earlier this week, Blizzard made the surprising announcement that Overwatch 2 would no longer be receiving its PvE Hero Mode, arguably the main thing that even justified having a sequel at all. PvE content is still planned for the game in the form of Story Missions, it's just Hero Mode that has been cut. Following this news, Keller has now shared his latest "Director's Take," a regular series of blog posts he shares covering the state of the game, where he talked about how the Overwatch team together following an MMO called Project Titan being cancelled, with the ultimate goal of developing a shooter MMO. According to Keller, the "Overwatch team, especially at its inception, considered itself an MMO development team," as it was "founded in the wake of a cancelled game at Blizzard called Project Titan… As we transitioned away from that original concept and started creating Overwatch, we included plans to one day return to that scope. We had a crawl, walk, run plan. Overwatch was the crawl, a dedicated version of PvE was the walk, and an MMO was the run. It was built into the DNA of the team early on, and some of us considered that final game a true realisation of the original vision of Project Titan." Read more

Gingers? In video games? Who allowed this?

Welcome to the Best Games Ever show Episode 52: the best game with a ginger protagonist. Cal Kestis of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is just the latest in a long line of Gaming Redheads, an esteemed group that includes such celebrated characters as Official Femshep, Joanna Dark, and what's-her-face out of Heavenly Sword. And it makes me swell with pride to see this proud tradition continuing. Listen. I'm not even a proper ginger, but my beard has the reddish hue of muddled European stock, and I look a bit auburn with edge lighting, so I think that basically makes me part of the ginger community. Therefore I can confidently say that growing up ginger, especially in the UK, is a mixed bag. As prejudices go, it's a fairly innocuous one to be at the receiving end of: mostly just daft banter, nothing particularly harrowing or sinister. But you are relentlessly considered fair game. Barely a day goes by where you don't hear a joke about gingers on the TV. It's a feature of your genetics that marks you out for endless ribbing, but it so rarely tips over into anything worse that it feels almost petty to complain about it. It's not remotely like living as part of a minority that experiences real prejudice, racism, or persecution. And so, the Ginger Experience is sort of like living with a permanently stuck sneeze: a source of perennial bother that you can't really do anything about. Read more

Xbox Game Pass gets surprise day one bonus – a cracking 3D Metroidvania sequel

Many of the most exciting games on Xbox’s unbeatable Game Pass service come in the form of the bonus little games that seemingly come out of nowhere. Some of the headline indie games on the service debuted by way of these last-minute surprise additions (Coffee Talk comes to mind). And whilst some games launched in this manner don’t do too well – Generation Zero, we’d like a word – we’re never going to look a bonus addition to the service in the mouth. Today, Supra Games UG dropped Supraland: Six Inches Under, a follow-up to its underdog Metroidvania puzzle game Supraland, as a surprise day-one addition to Xbox Game Pass. And it spins out the formula of the previous game in deeper and more interesting ways. So, what the hell is this game? Supraland: Six Inches Under puts you in the role of a very stressed Blue Plumber, tasked with rescuing and protecting the townsfolk of Supraland after a tragic event that beset the miniature population in the form of “The Rakening”. The (literal) sandbox has been blown wide open, and now your job is to delve into the loamy land beneath to make sure these strange little people can continue on with their tiny lives in peace. No one can find a Breath of the Wild fan favourite in Tears of the Kingdom

Pretty much every character from Breath of the Wild is back in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, but there's one character who is suspiciously absent. Spoilers ahead for the missing character (if an absence of a character counts as a spoiler to you)! When I say that almost every character is back, I mean it. You've got the big ones like Riju from Gerudo Town, Sidon from the Zora's Domain, even Purah is back, though a good bit older now (leading some to be insatiably thirsty). You'll even find NPCs that you almost definitely don't remember the name of, alongside a suite of new characters like Cece the fashionista, and Tauro, the Zonai Survey Team Leader. So where the hell is the best bard in all of Hyrule, the one and only Kass? Read more

Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is the highest rated game of all time on OpenCritic

To the surprise of probably no one, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is the highest rated game of all time on OpenCritic - and the highest of the year on Metacritic. Well folks, it looks like we have a new champion sitting on the throne of highest rated game of all time on OpenCritic, as Nintendo has stolen the spot from itself with its latest release, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. That title previously belonged to Super Mario Odyssey, Nintendo's other big name IP, but Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has managed to snag that top spot, putting the developer in quite the premium position. Tears of the Kingdom only snagged that number one position by a small margin though, coming down to less than one percent in difference, as the Zelda game has a very specific score of 97.233 out of 100, whereas Super Mario Odyssey has 96.811 (thanks, NintendoLife). You probably also won't be surprised to hear that Breath of the Wild is sat in third place, with a score of 95.905. It turns almost half of Hunt: Showdown players haven't even killed another player

It turns out that a pretty large portion of Hunt: Showdown players have actually even killed another player. If you've ever played Hunt: Showdown you'll know that other players aren't necessarily your biggest threat at any given point in time. It's a threatening world to exist in, and that doesn't always work for every player. So much so that it turns out 40% of players haven't even killed another player at all. As reported by PCGamer, who held a roundtable regarding first-person shooters at GDC, general manager for the Hunt franchise at Crytek David Fifield shared that statistic, noting that it's a big issue for new players when facing veteran players. "We have an achievement in Hunt called Debut," Fifield said. "It's 'kill your first enemy Hunter', 40% of our players never get it. We're a PvP game where you come in, you do some things, and 40% of the people trying Hunt have never killed another player." Due to the nature of Hunt: Showdown, which is PvPvE, there's a chance many players won't even encounter one another in a particular match. So it can be tricky for some when they come up against someone who's been playing the game for a while. Read more

Street Fighter 6 – the final preview: World Tour rounds out a genre-defining feature set

Street Fighter 6 may well be one of the greatest turn-arounds in gaming history. Cast your mind back to 2016, to the release of the deeply flawed Street Fighter 5. The bones of that package were pretty strong - but there also wasn’t much meat on them. In fact, if you didn’t want to play multiplayer, you were pretty much out of luck. It was a shocking, sloppy-feeling launch package. SF5 did improve over the years. It’s nowhere near as good as SF4, but I find it to be an enjoyable experience with a good amount of content in all modes. But it took the developers years, and a leadership overhaul, to get there. And perhaps SF5 is what needed to happen to learn a few potent lessons. Those lessons have been fully embraced in Street Fighter 6. Let’s be fair. I’ve talked about all of this before. I gushed about the game at a first limited hands-on, and then again later when the cast expanded. I’m one of only two fighting ame enthusiasts on VG247’s staff, too - and so I haven’t even been alone, with Connor also voicing his extreme excitement for SF6. But this most recent hands-on - the last before we’ll be downloading a final version of the game - is different. Read more

Sony promises more PC ports, so Bloodborne's only a matter of time, right?

Sony has confirmed that it plans to bring more of its games to PC in the future, notably because its games are doing quite well on computers. Since 2020 Sony has been steadily adding some of its biggest titles to PC, finally catching up with the times in making its games more accessible to a broader range of players. That all started with Horizon Zero Dawn, with games like God of War, Marvel's Spider-Man, and The Last of Us Part 1 coming to PC further down the line. As part of Sony's recent FY2022 financial report, Sony also confirmed that it plans to continue releasing its games on PC, which isn't surprising in the slightest because it's making plenty of money through the process (thanks, PCGamer). In the report, Sony notes that it plans to release Marvel's Spider-Man 2 this year, a title currently without a release date, and it also wrote of its plans to continue making new IP, as well as "rolling out catalogue titles for PC." The line does make it sound like it still won't have its games launch simultaneously on console and PC, but it's something I guess. Read more
